Old & In The Way 1986 Rykodisc CD brought together an extraordinary group of musicians: Jerry Garcia on banjo and vocals, David Grisman on mandolin and vocals, Peter Rowan on guitar and vocals, Vassar Clements on fiddle, and John Kahn on acoustic bass. Recorded live at the Boarding House in San Francisco on October 8, 1973, the performance captures the group exploring the traditional bluegrass sound that had influenced Garcia and Grisman long before their better-known musical careers.

Originally released on Round Records in 1975, the album became an enduring document of Garcia’s bluegrass work outside the Grateful Dead. This collectible compact disc edition was issued by Rykodisc in 1986 as catalog number RCD 10009 and manufactured in Japan.

This particular example is especially attractive for the collector. There is no barcode printed on the physical release, the disc carries a “201” stamp in the hub/mirror-ring area, and the packaging carries the AAD SPARS code.

The CD has been carefully preserved and is graded Near Mint (NM). It has been fully play-tested and plays perfectly. The original booklet/inserts and jewel case are likewise in Near Mint condition, making this an unusually clean complete example.

The ten-song program includes “Midnight Moonlight,” “Panama Red,” “Land of the Navajo,” the title track and the group’s wonderful interpretation of the Rolling Stones’ “Wild Horses.”

An excellent addition to a Jerry Garcia, David Grisman, Grateful Dead-related, bluegrass, or early compact-disc collection — and a particularly appealing example of an early Japanese-manufactured Rykodisc release.
